The plummeting price trend HD DVD players have experienced has now spread to the Xbox 360 with today’s announcement that Microsoft is cutting the HD DVD Add-On Drive from $199 to $179 effective next month. In addition, Microsoft will throw in five free (as-of-yet- determined) movies for anyone who purchases a drive in the months of August or September .
Is this another desperate attempt by HD DVD backers to counter Blu-ray’s spreading support, an answer to Sony’s recent Playstation 3 drice cut, or both? No one knows for sure, but it appears the high-def home video wars are starting to heat up as we head towards the all-important holiday shopping season.
