Disney unveils first Blu-ray titles

Buena Vista Home Entertainment will finally formally unveil their Blu-ray Disc plans today, according to an article at HomeMediaRetailing.com.

The Blu-ray debut will consist of 9 titles, 5 of which contain an exclusive animated “Blu-Scape” short shot by renowned cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg in 1080p high definition. They will include “Dinosaur,” “Eight Below,” “Glory Road,” “The Haunted Mansion” and “Gone in 60 Seconds.”

The first two waves are comprised of “Dinosaur,” “Eight Below, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “The Great Raid” on September 19, followed by “Glory Road,” “The Haunted Mansion,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “Dark Water ” and “The Brothers Grimm” on October 17. All titles will carry an SRP of $34.99.

Buena Vista is hoping to push the boundaries right out the gate with promises of Internet connectivity, bookmarks and of course in-film accessible menus. They’re also planning to include a new layer-coating technology providing a scratch-resistant disc surface, something I’ve personally been wanting implemented onto disc media for many years now.

Now all eyes fall upon Twentieth Century Fox, the last studio to announce when their first Blu-ray Discs will arrive. I expect that announcement to come any day now. Stay tuned.
