The Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions have both underperformed this season, especially the former and the inconsistent play of Robert Griffin III (RG3). It could be RG3’s last start for awhile if he can’t show improvement over the past two games, both of which resulted in Redskins losses. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has been under scrutiny since announcing RG3 was his starting quarterback despite the Rookie of the Year not playing a single snap of preseason football coming off his ACL injury. Shanahan has stuck with RG3 through two games and he hasn’t been the same player as last season; less aggressive, not as much zip on his passes, and rusty all around.
Griffin’s play this season has been a tale of two halves. In the first half of their two games, he has played miserably with 160 yards and no touchdown passes, along with two interceptions. However in the second half, after the Redskins defense, one of the worst in the league, has given up several scores, Griffin has caught fire with 489 yards passing and five touchdown passes, and only one interception. The key for RG3 today will be coming out strong in the first half and showing his team, and the world for that matter, that his knee is healed and he’s willing to run for first downs when the opportunities present themselves.
The Redskins defense has given up over 500 yards per game thus far and faces another solid offense in Detroit’s. The Lions have averaged nearly 400 yards per game on offense and close to 30 point per game, up amongst the league leaders. If the Redskins defense and especially secondary can’t stop Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, then RG3 might be stuck working out of the pocket almost exclusively to play catch up before the first quarter is even over.
A big concern for the Lions is the status of Reggie Bush. Their flashy running back took a shot to the knee against the Cardinals last week and was ineffective when he returned to the game. With Bush out, and even when he came back, the Lions failed to score a single point and ended up losing that game. Bush right now is a game time decision after an encouraging MRI on his knee last Monday. If Bush can’t go then Joique Bell will step into his role and the Redskins will likely beef up their secondary in response.
History is not on Detroit’s side as they have lost 21 straight games in Washington including the playoffs. If RG3 can’t get his act together and the Redskins secondary can’t slow down Stafford then that streak is poised to be stopped. A second half Detroit lead could end up spurring chants for Kirk Cousins from the Washington fans.
