Once thought to be called The Kung Fu Kid, the remake of The Karate Kid has been unveiled via this first trailer and will retain the name of its inspiration.
Will Smith’s son Jaden takes over the title role from Ralph Macchio as a scrawny kid who is taken under the wing of an unlikely mentor, Jackie Chan in place of Pat Morita. The film looks to mix plot elements from the first and second Karate Kid films as Jaden’s character learns Karate after having traveled to China and fancied a girl a young local karate fighter already has eyes on.
The trailer is surprisingly familiar with many nods to the original films and far less “lame” than some feared the remake would be. If anything, it will be a vehicle for young Jaden Smith to kick start his acting career and follow in his father’s footsteps.
Look for The Karate Kid in theaters on June 11, 2010.
