Weekend Box Office Predictions: Horrible Bosses Battle Robots

July 07, 2011

Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper hope laughs will help topple Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the box office this weekend. It'll be a skyscraper-tall order as the 3D robotic juggernaut has plowed through the competition since its release over a week ago.

In our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are given the opportunity to predict what those three films along with Cars 2 and Bad Teacher will make at the North American box office this weekend (Friday, July 8 - 10). Our Prophet's prediction will go head-to-head with the average predictions of all the players that participate. If the players win three or more films then the top individual player will take home Company Men and, newly added to the pot this round, The Rite on Blu-ray as last week the Prophet won 3-2.

If the Prophet wins again then both prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by a third. That's the maximum size pot that will be offered in the game and will be available until the players can beat the Prophet.

Predictions entered will immediately update the average prediction scores for all the players below. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, July 7.

There are currently 38 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for July 8 - 10 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
After a slow mid-week start, Transformers 3 exploded over the holiday weekend and made nearly $100 million from Friday through Sunday alone. It continues to perform well through this week and stands a strong chance of beating both the newcomers in its second weekend of release.
All: $50.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $50.3   Actual: $47.1
Horrible Bosses
Every R-rated comedy this summer has exceeded expectations at the box office. The Hangover Part II, Bridesmaids and Bad Teacher have set a precedent for all to follow. Can Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and the gang keep the streak alive? The odds are favorable. Horrible Bosses opens on over 2,900 screens.
All: $29.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $28.2   Actual: $28.3
Zookeeper
Sony is pushing Zookeeper hard this weekend by opening it on over 3,300 screens. The Kevin James comedy co-starring a zoo's worth of talking animals hopes to attract families and only has fading Cars 2 as competition. The last James film, The Dilemma, only opened to $17.8 million. And he had Vince Vaughn to help out.
All: $21.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $22.9   Actual: $20.1
Cars 2
Cars 2 drives into its third weekend of release having dropped an unimpressive 60% the previous weekend, down to $26.3 million. The arrival of The Zookeeper will further put a dent in Cars 2's earnings and accelerate its journey to home video later this year.
All: $14.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $13.5   Actual: $15.2
Bad Teacher
Like Cars 2, Bad Teacher suffered a fairly steep drop in its second weekend of release, to the tune of $14.5 million or 54%. Horrible Bosses will inflict much damage on Bad Teacher's third weekend. I'd expect another similar drop and most certainly into single digits.
All: $8.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.1   Actual: $8.9
