Weekend Box Office Predictions: Harry Potter to Soar

July 14, 2011

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is primed to cast a magical spell on the North American box office this weekend. How high can it go? The general consensus is that multiple box office records will fall by the time this weekend comes to a close.

In this new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are given the opportunity to predict what Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will make this Friday through Sunday, as well as the other newcomer Winnie the Pooh and holdovers Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Horrible Bosses and The Zookeeper. Aim high on Potter and you should do well.

Your predictions are then averaged in with the other players to go head-to-head with our Prophet. If the players managed to beat The Prophet on 3 or more of the 5 films, then the top player finisher will win whatever Blu-ray titles are in the prize pot.

In the last round, the players won 3-2 so conehead433 scored a pair of Blu-ray titles. The pot resets this week with a musical number in the form of B.B. King: Live on Blu-ray.

Player predictions entered will immediately update the average prediction scores below. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, July 14. Hop on a broom and get those predictions in as quickly as you can.

There are currently 37 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for July 15 - 17 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Whatever you're thinking of predicting for the final Harry Potter film, aim higher. It's already broken pre-sale ticket records, is opening on a record number of IMAX and 3D screens, and overall is opening on close to 4,400 screens. Anything under $100 million is laughable. Anything up near the all-time opening weekend record is more likely.
All: $146.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $159.3   Actual: $169.2
Winnie the Pooh
Disney is counter-programming the Potter craze with some old school animation in the form of Winnie the Pooh. The bear stuffed with fluff is only opening on 2,300 screens so don't expect huge returns. Families with little ones not quite ready for Voldemort or already saw Cars 2 might make their way to Mr. Pooh.
All: $16.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.4   Actual: $7.9
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Transformers 3 barrels into its third weekend having dropped a sharp 52% from its second weekend of release. The problem for Optimus and the gang is Harry Potter is going to steal many of its IMAX and 3D screens. This could result in a larger than 43% drop that Revenge of the Fallen experienced in its third weekend of release.
All: $23.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $22.8   Actual: $21.3
Horrible Bosses
Horrible Bosses will remain the top R-rated option at theaters this weekend as neither newcomer is geared toward adults. This should help ease the cooling off from its strong $28.3 million debut last weekend. For comparison, Bad Teacher slipped 54% in its second weekend of release.
All: $15.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $17.0   Actual: $17.8
Zookeeper
Zookeeper, with its horrible reviews and weak word of mouth, is set up for a big fall from its $20.1 million opening last weekend before you factor in the arrival of Harry Potter and Winnie the Pooh to steal its audience. I'd be shocked if Zookeeper managed to top the $10 million mark.
All: $9.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.1   Actual: $12.3
