The Season 4 midseason finale turned out to be what many thought would be the Season 3 finale as the Governor and his followers, armed with a tank and machine guns, parked themselves outside the prison and demanded to see Rick while holding Michonne and Hershel hostage. Rick had no choice but to come out and talk as the Governor had Michonne's sword and his prisoners on their knees.
Rick tried to bargain with the Governor, claiming there was plenty room in the prison for both groups. And he was right as there were unused cell blocks, not to mention the illness that swept through the prison had cut down on the population by at least 15. Unfortunately for Rick and his friends, the Governor didn't believe Rick and had already made up his mind to take the prison by force. He announced his intentions by hacking at Hershel's neck with the sword.
With Hershel mortally wounded, the Governor ordered his crew to attack and "kill them all," then began to beat down on a wounded Rick whom had been shot. Rick was in the process of being strangled to death by the Governor when Michonne thrust her sword through the Governor's torso, which was followed up a short time later by Lilly putting the Governor out of his misery.
The gunfire drew walkers to the prison and the tank took down the fences, resulting in the prison falling to the undead. Rick's group was broken up as they fled in different directions. Daryl and Beth went one way, Rick and Carl another, and Michonne took off on her own. Maggie and Glenn were separated, and Tyreese found himself with Lizzie and Mika. Lily and her sister are still alive, and Bob Stookey is on the run as well.
In tonight's midseason return, the framework for the series will shift to focus on individual stories rather than the group as a whole. In particular, Rick and Carl will be highlighted tonight, as will Michonne. Other characters such as Daryl, Beth, Tyreese, Maggie and Glenn will have to wait their turn until the next episode at the earliest.
